Why me?
Of all those it could have been, why me?
From the whole squad, why me?
Singled out from the entire platoon, why only me?
In the midst of all the battle, why me?
Why am I the only one left?
Why am I the only one amidst this rocky cleft?
Why am I the only one observing the death of those around?
Why am I the single soldier left upon this ground?
Why me?
Of all armed and armored, why me?
From rows lying ready in wait, why me?
Singled out from every corpse, why only me?
In the midst of all the death, why me?
Only I remain to wallow in the mud,
Only I remain to smell the growing pools of blood,
Only I remain to watch the enemy scud,
Only I remain to be awash in the growing flood.
Why me?
Of all the brave and skilled, why me?
From even the weathered and prepared, why me?
Singled out from all my friends, why only me?
In the midst of all the carnage, why me?
Alone I lay to hear the dying cry,
Alone I lay to see each one die,
Alone I lay to mourn the dead,
Alone I lay to hold my stead.
Why me?
